Gift Aid - Help the club now !
By Karen Wyrwas

As Broomfield Park Swimming Club is recognised as a charity by HM Revenue
& Customs (HMRC), we are entitled to reclaim the basic rate of tax on membership
subscriptions. This means that for every £1 paid, we can claim an extra 25 pence.

This is great news for the club as we have the potential to claim up to around £1,500
per year, based on current membership levels. This will help considerably in covering
our costs and enable us to keep the fees to a minimum.

HOWEVER, we are only allowed to reclaim this money from HMRC in respect of those
people who have signed a Gift Aid Declaration Form. This is a very simple form
(just name, address & signature) which needs to be completed by every adult swimmer
or a parent of children under 18, the only requirement being that the person signing the
form is an income tax payer paying income tax at least equal to the amount we will reclaim:
£5 for each membership subscription.

5 Golds For Charlie and Carl Breaks the Minute
Enfield Borough Championships 27-28 March.

Another very successful weekend for Broomfield Park with swimmers coming
away with 14 Gold medals, 17 Silver and 14 Bronze. 33 Club records and
154 PB's from 199 swims.

The most amazing swim of the weekend was probably Carl Wyrwas who had
the whole of the Broomfield section of the balcony cheering him home to break
the minute for the 100 Metres Freestyle in a time of 59.95. Carl also came home
with 3 Gold medals 3 Silver and a bronze.

Charlie Crowfoot had a great weekend with 5 Gold medals and one Silver.

Other medal winners included Alice Mason 2 Gold and 3 Silver, Beth Wilson
1 Gold 2 silver, Kelly Floyd 1 Gold 2 Silver & 3 Bronze, Ross Mason 2 Gold and
1 Silver. Ross was very unfortunate to be denied a 3rd Gold when he was
disqualified for wobbling on the block at the beginning of his 50 Metres  Freestyle
race. George Stewart 1 Silver and 2 Bronze, Laurie Pearce 1 Silver and 1 Bronze,
Tessa Mason 3 Silver and 1 Bronze, Verity Dieter 1 Silver 2 Bronze, Beth Robbins
1 Bronze, Ella Wyrwas 1 bronze, Isabel Mason 1 Bronze, Molly Tonini 2 Bronze,
Michalis Kashis 1 Bronze.

Michalis was our swimmer with the biggest improvement in his PB's Knocking
20 seconds off of his 100 Metre breaststroke time and taking 18 seconds off both
his 100 Metres freestyle and 100 IM.

We also now have some qualifiers’ for next year’s Middx county Bagcats a year early
as a result of the 50/100 meet. Congratulations to Ross Mason (50 + 100 FR QT),
Carl Wyrwas (50 + 100 FR QT), Kelly Floyd (100 IM QT),
Tessa Mason (50 BRS + 50 BK + 50 FR + 100 IM QT).

Many took the brave step of competing for the first time. It is a very daunting
experience standing on the high blocks at Southbury road with a balcony full of
spectators. It’s a big step up for our development swimmers that have only ever
experienced a Bpsc Race Night at QE before. Well done to all of you, the club is
very proud of you.

There were some problems with false starts, hats and goggles falling off, swimmers
arriving after the warm up had finished and disqualifications for in correct
breaststroke leg actions. Some turns were also illegal.

However this is by far and away one of the best ways to learn what competition is all
about, and how you personally can improve. The club will support you in any way that
it can to make your next gala experience as exciting and productive as this one was.

British Gas Bagcat & Youth Competition 2010

Sessions 1-6 20th & 21st Feb

The first sessions of this competition which comprise the 50M sprints took place
on the 20th and 21st February at Southbury Road Pool. This is the highest level
of competition that our swimmers have achieved so far. So the competition was
bound to be fierce. Our swimmers did not disappoint putting in some Stirling
performances and showing that all the hard work in training is paying off.

Tessa Mason was our youngest competitor at 9 years old. With an entry time of 53.45
Tessa smashed her Pb recording a time of 49.16 which placed her 6th for her age in the
county on the 50m Breast. The time is also a Bpsc Club Record.

The next event for Tessa was the 50m Free her entry time was 39.84 and once again
Tessa did a Pb recording a time of 38.43. This placed her 13th in the County and was once
again a new Club record in the 10 Years Girls category.

Next up was Kelly-Sarah Floyd her entry time for the 50 Breast was 42.10 and she went on
to produce a time of 41.04 this placed her 6th in the county for her age and was also a
Bpsc Club and Junior Record. Next for Kelly was the 50m Free her entry time was 33.36
she recorded a new Pb of 33.22 placing 18th in the county and setting a new Bpsc club
and junior record in the process. In the 50m Fly Kelly broke her Pb once again with a time
of 36.62 placing 16th and setting Bpsc Club and Junior Records once more.

Also swimming was Carl Wyrwas in the 16 years 50m Free he smashed over a
second of his Pb coming in with a time of 27.11 this placed him 11th in the county and
also set new Bpsc Club, Junior and age 17 records.

Well done to all three swimmers for not only qualifying for this event but also conducting
themselves so professionally on poolside. Wearing the correct clothing and making sure
they spoke to the coach before and after their races.

It’s easy to listen to your coach but not so easy to put the tips into practice during the
pressure of competition well done.

Sessions 7-10 6th & 7th March 2010

Kelly-Sarah Floyd added to her tally of pb's at the latest round of the Middx Bagcats.
Results as follows 200M IM Placed 15th In Middx with a time of 2.55.35 (Previous time 2.59.67)
Kelly set Pb's her 50M times going through the 200M IM two lengths of the pool on each stroke.
New Bpsc Club Record.

Tessa Mason did a Stirling performance Results as follows 200M Breaststroke Placed 7th in Middx
with a time of 3.46.78 (Previous time 4.06.80) Tessa attacked this race showing that she has the
endurance to compete in 200M Events whilst holding proper technique and not just the 50M Dash.
New Bpsc Club Record.

Beth Robbins qualified for the 50M Backstroke last year and this year she did not disappoint.
Results as follows 200M Backstroke in a time of 3.06.63 (Previous Time 3.28.12) The time would
have placed her 11th in the county but for a disqualification on the second to last turn. Beth came
away happy knowing that she nailed all the other turns during the race which has greatly contributed
towards her 22 second time improvement well done Beth.

Sessions 11 - 14 13th & 14th March 2010

Charlie Crowfoot went out like a storm on his debut County Champs race. He qualified for the 100M
Individual Medley event which demonstrates the ability to swim all four strokes to a high standard.
He put in a time of 1.12.84 which is a new personal best time. The fly and Backstroke leg was a
blistering 32.9 secs, the Breaststroke leg was 22.00 secs but Charlie brought the swim home with
a frontcrawl leg of 17.7 secs.

This placed Charlie 18th Overall in the Middlesex County which is fantastic. Well done.

Kelly-Sarah Floyd was up again this time swimming in 200M Freestyle. She took off nearly three
seconds from her Pb coming with a time of 2.35.14. Kelly went out for the first 100M in a lightning
speed of 1.13.53 which was actually a Pb in itself and then on for the second 100M in a time of
1min 22 secs. This swim placed 18th in the county as well.

Kelly also swam in the 100 IM on the next day shaving nearly a second of her Pb to place 13th in the county.
The fly and the backstroke leg were very fast indeed, her backstroke leg was so fast that it altered her
stroke count needed to complete the backstroke to breaststroke turn at speed and meant that she found
herself unable to push off properly.

Kelly then made a great recovery to get her speed back up on the breaststroke leg showing great experience
under pressure. This placed 13th in the county in a time of 1.20.77.

Carl Wyrwas Learned a very hard lesson when he turned up for his second event of the championships
the 16 Years 100M Freestyle. Carl had previously put in a Pb for the 50M freestyle of 27.11 This meant
that he was on form be the first Senior Boy at Broomfield Park in some years to break the 1 min mark
for the 100M Free. You can imagine our dismay when we found out it was not to be.

He was disqualified at the start under ASA law for going in before the starting signal. What compounded
matters were that the swimmer in the next lane started to dive in and Carl saw this from the corner of
his eye whilst waiting for the start signal. So we didn’t get to see Carl swim as he was pulled out.

We can not wait to see Carl do this event in the future we have a feeling it’s going to be very very fast indeed.

Lastest Winner Of Kevin Astley Trophy
By Andy Crowfoot

The latest winner of the Kevin Astley trophy was Tessa Mason.
The Trophy is awarded to the swimmer with most improved Butterfly Time.

Tessa improved her time by a massive 12 seconds between June and December
last year going from 1.03.31 to 51.82. The trophy was first awarded in 1986 in
memory of Kevin who was a club member. Kevin was sadly killed in a road accident
in Germany when he was just 18 years old and had only just passed out as a
Royal Marine and was stationed in Germany at the time.

Kevin's favourite stroke was Butterfly so his parents gave the club a cup in his name.
The trophy was to be awarded e01very 6 months and can only be won once by a member
of the club.

The cup has not been in use until recently and was only reinstated last year when
it was presented to Kelly Floyd by Senior Coach Karen Wells, thus Tessa becomes
the second swimmer in recent years to be given the honour of receiving this
memorial trophy.

"When I Swim" Poem by Senior County Squad Swimmer
Kelly-Sarah Floyd

When I swim
I feel free
Like no one can ever touch me
I can be as quick as lightning
Yet on the inside I’m calm and serene
When I swim

When I swim
All my problems fade away
Nothing really matters but the swim ahead
I am challenged to do better, to be better
Constantly pushing past my limits
When I swim

When I swim
I sometimes lose track of time
It passes so quickly I forget the clocks ticking
I don’t feel any pain, any strain
I just want to beat my best, be the best
When I swim

When I swim
It feels so instinctive
Like part of my natural rhythm
I feel exhilarated, strong, bold and courageous
I feel free
When I swim
